People have just two weeks left to spend £5 notes featuring Elizabeth Fry before they are withdrawn by the Bank of England.

So now is the time to search the side of the sofa and empty money boxes in order to exchange them at post offices or local banks.

New polymer £5 notes were issued on 13 September 2016 and will officially replace the paper version on Friday 5 May, when they will cease to be legal tender.

A new polymer £10 note will be issued in September 2017 and a £20 note by 2020.

On 18 July the Bank will mark the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death, by unveiling the new £10 note featuring the renowned writer. The event will take place at Winchester Cathedral, where Austen was buried in 1817.
Polymer banknotes are cleaner, more secure, and more durable than paper banknotes. They will provide enhanced counterfeit resilience, and increase the quality of banknotes in circulation.
