Over half of Northamptonshire businesses would vote to remain in the European Union (EU) in the upcoming referendum, according to new statistics.
A survey compiled by the Northamptonshire Chamber found that 53.6 per cent of local businesses would vote for Britain to stay as a member on Thursday, June 23.
The findings, from a survey conducted in April, reflect the national results found by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC).
Paul Griffiths, chief executive of Northamptonshire Chamber, told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo: “With the EU Referendum fast approaching, now is the time to engage with this debate – especially as it impacts many businesses.
“Either vote will create a degree of uncertainty. A ‘leave’ vote because of the impact of exiting the EU and subsequent protracted processes, and a ‘remain’ vote because of the impact of future negotiations.
“The chamber – although neutral in this debate – is actively working to ensure businesses are kept informed and up to date on developments from both sides of the argument.”
The survey also found that 37.5 per cent of those asked would vote to leave the EU, while 8.9 per cent were undecided.
The Northamptonshire Chamber are set to host a debate in response to the findings with representatives from official campaign groups, Vote Leave and Britain Stronger in Europe set to present their arguments.
The EU Referendum debate will be held at Nene Whitewater Centre, on Bedford Road, Northampton, from 10am to noon. It is free to attend and exclusive to member organisations.
