Organised to take place on Thursday, June 23, the vote was announced by Prime Minister David Cameron in order to give the public the opportunity to decide whether Britain retains membership of the EU or leaves and goes it alone.

As part of an opinion gathering method by the Chamber, a poll was created to capture an image of how Wellingborough and the surrounding areas are going to vote on the issue.

David Cross, Chamber president, said: “This summer the country will make a massive decision which could have profound impacts across the business community.

“As a representative of businesses in Wellingborough and the surrounding districts, we are asking our members and associates to give their views on this momentous question.”

Chancellor George Osborne delivered a statement to the BBC earlier today declaring that if Britain voted to leave the EU it would be an “enormous economic gamble”, while Justice Secretary Michael Gove has been publicly campaigning for the ‘Brexit’.

After two days of negotiating in Brussels earlier this month, Cameron made a deal on EU reform which he claimed would give the UK special privileges within the union.

Britain’s last referendum on the EU debate came in 1975 shortly after it became a member, with the country voting to stay in. Growing calls from the public and politicians asking for another vote forced the government into granting their demands.

British, Irish and Commonwealth citizens over the age of 18 who are residents in the UK have the chance to vote on the key issue which will shape the future of the country.

The EU was formed after World War Two in order to help forge better relationships between European countries through trade movements, with 28 nations now involved in the political and economic partnership. Operating on a single market basis, the union allows for the free movement of capital, goods, services and people between member states.
