Free children’s entertainment and activities are being made available during the summer holidays to help boost trade within Wellingborough market, the council has pledged.

In a bid to encourage more shoppers to the town centre, a bouncy castle will be accessible for children every Wednesday throughout August in the market area.

A Punch and Judy show will also be available on Wednesday August 19 every hour between 10am and 3pm.

In a joint venture between Wellingborough Council and Wellingborough Norse – the organisation that runs the market on behalf of the council – it is hoped the child friendly activities will boost trade and promote the market.

Dean Granger from Wellingborough Norse said: “We tried a free bouncy castle in May as part of the Love Your Local Market campaign and it was really popular.

“As well as the bouncy castle, we’ve added in a few extras this time round, so there’s something for everyone and plenty to keep the kids occupied.

“It can be difficult to shop when the children are off school. We wanted to put some entertainment on during the holidays so the kids would be happy to join in shopping trips.

“Wellingborough market has a lot to offer and hopefully these activities will encourage people to come and give us a try.”

Both organisations are also trying to attract new market stall holders by three months’ free rent.

Mr Granger added: “We have a long history as a market town and we want to see our market thrive. We have a number of promotional activities and incentives planned to encourage both shoppers and traders.

“We’re particularly keen to get more food traders on our market. A wider range of goods on offer means people are more likely to shop here, which is good for all the traders.
