2012 07 10 Nice grass !The historic Sywell Aerodrome has been hosting a number of key events in the aviation calendar for more than 80 years.

The prestigious airfield, which dates back to 1927, is home to the UK’s largest aircraft rally which, once again, is being held across several days in September.

The Light Aircraft Association Rally (LAA) attracts thousands of people every year who gather to see more than 800 different aircrafts fly in. Plane spotters revel in a chance to see a huge range of different aircrafts up close and enthusiasts get a chance to compete in the annual award ceremony which include categories, such as the best built aircraft and the plane with the most air miles on its clock. Visitors can camp on site giving them the opportunity to spend time with other plane lovers and make use of the bar in the evening.

The second largest aviation show is also held annually at Sywell. The Aero Expo showcases the latest aircraft from the leading manufacturers in the industry. Throughout the weekend there are also aerobatic displays, post show aviator parties and the opportunity to see the very latest aviation products on the market.

Sywell Aerodrome also hosts a number of smaller events each year, such as the British Aerobatic Championships and the UK Helicopter Championships, which have also become hugely popular over the years. As well as the varied events, it continues to be used as a working airfield and is a popular place for people to visit for various flying experiences.

The family run business was created in 1927 by Harold Brown, the grandfather of the current managing director Michael Bletsoe-Brown. He formed the Northamptonshire Aero Club and it was the club members who levelled the ground to make it suitable for aircraft landing.

The airfield has become an important part of Northamptonshire’s heritage, as well as a popular tourist attraction and integral part of the aviation community.

The LAA Rally takes place on September 4, 5 and 6.
