Wellingborough’s beach officially opened
Youngsters have been building sandcastles and their parents relaxing in deckchairs at Wellingborough town centre’s new beach.
The Mayor of Wellingborough Graham Lawman and Mayoress Lora Lawman declared ‘Down on the Beach’ officially open at 10am on Saturday morning (August 3).
The 130-square metre beach located in Market Street, in the circle mosaic in front of McDonald’s, will be available until August 18 between 10am and 4pm with deckchairs, buckets and spades as well as sounds of the sea.
Specially-made Wellingborough rock is on sale and there will also be a stilt walker on Saturdays and Sundays. The beach has been organised by the Wellingborough Business Improvement District (BID), which stages events to encourage people into the town centre to boost trade.
Cllr Lawman said: “It’s absolutely brilliant. It was nice to see all the kids enjoying themselves including some who might not have the chance to go to the beach.
“I will be taking my stick of Wellingborough rock to our German twin town, Wittlich. It’s a brilliant idea.
“The Medieval Festival had a fantastic response too, people are starting to realise that the BID are behind these events.”
Sam Hawkins, from Wellingborough, brought her children Harry, five, and Jessica, four, to the beach on Saturday. She said: “They absolutely loved it. We also popped into a few shops, it made for a nice day out.”
Harry added: “I like going to the beach. I built a big sandcastle.”
John Cable, BID manager, said: “The beach not only offers an enjoyable family outing but also turns our great town centre into a leisure destination. With free parking, green spaces and independent shops, Wellingborough is well worth a visit. Sometimes you have to give people an excuse to visit and remind them of what we have got to offer.”
