As junior Vice President of Wellingborough Chamber of Commerce I attend the ExecutiveCommittee meetings each month held at the Ibis Hotel. The hot topics this month were the closure of Wellingborough Prison and the dismal performance of our High Street retailers. We can’t do much about the Prison other than write to Ken Clark and our local MP but we can do something about retail sales! I know most of the retailers in Wellingborough and very few are doing the one thing that could really help their business: BUILDING A DATABASE!
Once a business has a DATABASE in a format that can be used for emailing newsletters, conducting surveys, sending text messages etc, they can do something pro-active when footfall is low such as during the Olympics! Rather than ADVERTISE and HARD SELL with huge discounts (which only serve to erode their profits) they could use a “SOFT SELL” approach communicating directly with customers, building a relationship based on credibility, awareness and loyalty. A well written, nicely designed E- Newsletter sent every month will keep your customers, and prospects informed and interested, building a relationship as well as helping to drive traffic back to your website, increasing your SEO.
